Numismatic Insight: The Duisburg Denar of Conrad II (Dannenberg 311 / Berghaus 1.1)
Overview: A silver denar of the imperial mint of Duisburg in Lower Lorraine (Lotharingia Inferior) under Conrad II (Latin Chuonradus / Conradus), king of Germany from 1024 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1027 until 1039. Struck after his imperial coronation, c. 1027–1039. Undated (ND). Weight 1.25 g; grade XF/XF (Extremely Fine both sides). Catalogued Dannenberg 311 and Berghaus 1.1 — the standard references for this early Salian Duisburg type.
Design: Obverse — crowned bust facing; legend (+CH)VONINADV MP (a specimen reading of the imperial title CHVONRADVS IMP, “Chuonradus Imperator”). Reverse — mint name arranged crosswise: +DIVS horizontally and BV-RG vertically (Duisburg), with decorative arcs (lunettes / half-moons) in the quarters. Both sides show clear medieval style and strong silver surfaces consistent with XF preservation.
Historical context: Conrad II (c. 990–1039) was the first emperor of the Salian dynasty. After the Ottonian line ended with Henry II, he consolidated royal and imperial authority over the German duchies and the Church, extended influence in Italy and Burgundy (which he inherited in 1032), and promoted selected royal/imperial mints to restore central control of the coinage. Duisburg, an important Rhineland trading centre in Lower Lorraine with a royal mint privilege going back to the Carolingian period, was (re)activated as an imperial mint under Conrad after 1027. This type is among the earliest and most characteristic Duisburg issues of his reign: the facing crowned bust asserts the emperor’s person, while the crosswise mint legend with arcs in the quarters marks the place of striking — a practical and distinctive design for small high-medieval denars. Such pieces circulated along the Rhine and through Lower Lorraine and the neighbouring German lands in the early Salian period.
