Germany, Franconia (Mainz). AR Denar, ND, Henry II (Heinrich II; emperor 1014–1024). Imperial mint. 1.07 g. XF/XF. A few peck-marks. Silver. Catalog: cf. Dannenberg 785; 786a (obol).
Numismatic Insight: Imperial Mainz Denar of Henry II (cf. Dannenberg 785 / 786a)
Overview: A silver denar of the imperial mint at Mainz in the name of Henry II, King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor (crowned emperor 1014; died 1024). Weight 1.07 g; grade XF/XF. A few peck-marks. Compared with Dannenberg 785 and the related obol 786a.
Design: Obverse — cross pattée with pellets in the quarters; legend (+HEINRIC)VS REX. Reverse — church façade with wedge-shaped cross in centre and three dots in the pediment; blundered legend +ITFC...OM.
Historical context: Henry II (the last Ottonian emperor) strengthened imperial authority and church reform; Mainz was a leading ecclesiastical and minting centre on the Middle Rhine. Imperial denars from Mainz circulated widely in the German kingdom and beyond. Peck-marks again point to northern testing practices familiar from Baltic–Scandinavian silver circuits.
Numismatic details: AR Denar. Weight 1.07 g. Grade XF/XF. Undated (ND). Ruler: Henry II (1014–1024 as emperor). Mint: Mainz (imperial). Catalog: cf. Dannenberg 785; 786a (obol). Legends: (+HEINRIC)VS REX / +ITFC...OM (blundered). A few peck-marks.
