Overview: A silver denar of the Archbishopric of Cologne from the mint of Soest — an anonymous late imitation of Cologne issues bearing the imperial title of Emperor Otto (Otto II or III, 973–1002). Struck in the later 11th century (c. 1050–1100), well after Otto’s lifetime. Undated (ND). Weight 1.31 g; grade UNC/UNC (Uncirculated both sides). Catalogued Dannenberg 342 var. — the reference for this Cologne/Soest Otto-imitation type.

Design: Obverse — cross with pellets in the quarters; in one quarter the characteristic “Soest sign”; legend +OOTD+IVLPHINIG (a blundered rendering instead of the prototype ODDO IMP AVG). Reverse — COLONIA monogram (Cologne). Both sides show sharp medieval style and bright silver surfaces consistent with UNC preservation.

Historical context: Cologne was the leading royal and ecclesiastical mint of the Ottonian–Salian Rhineland; its denars with the COLONIA monogram and Otto’s imperial title were widely imitated. Soest, an important Westphalian mint under the archbishops of Cologne, produced anonymous late imitations that keep the Cologne reverse monogram while altering or blundering the Otto legend and adding the local Soest mark in a cross quarter. Such pieces belong to the broad 11th-century “Otto–Cologne” imitation series that continued to circulate in Westphalia and along Rhineland trade routes long after the emperors named on the dies.
