Copper 5 kopecks from 1785, struck at the Ekaterinburg Mint (mint mark EM) during the reign of Empress Catherine II (1762–1796).
The obverse shows Catherine's crowned monogram inside a wreath of laurel and palm branches, with the date 1785 across the field. The reverse shows the crowned double-headed eagle holding sceptre and orb, in the 1780–1787 style. The mint letters E–M sit below the eagle's wings, and the value ПЯТЬ КОПѢЕКЪ runs on a ribbon below.
Catherine's heavy copper coinage was struck to the standard of 16 roubles from one pood of copper. That is why her 5 kopecks are such large, impressive coins, and this one weighs 58.93 g. The Ekaterinburg Mint in the Urals was founded in 1725 next to the region's copper works and became the empire's leading copper mint. Its coins were the everyday money of 18th-century Russia. Mintage for 1785: 43,070,200 (Bitkin 636).
This is a well-preserved example with clear details: the crowned monogram, the date and the eagle's plumage all stand out sharply. It has an attractive natural brown patina and a full, heavy flan. A fine piece for any collection of Catherine the Great's coinage.
