Bare head of Louis XVI, left., Crowned arms of France and Navarre., Graded PCGS AU58. This gold louis struck in Strasbourg in 1786 is called "à la corne" (with horn on head) for the die break at the level of the forehead which could be interpreted as a voluntary and insulting mark towards Louis XVI following rumours that he was unable to have an heir with the queen. It is in fact a die break located at this place by chance. Specimen in very good condition, the VINC of the reverse legend appears slightly ghosted on the right. Pedigree: abbé Thilliez collection. Gold 917‰., LUD·XVI·D·G·FR· ET NAV·REX·, CHRS·REGN·VINC·IMPER* PCGS certificate number: 45101280
