Large laureate head of Louis XIII right, with the large wick., Cross formed of eight crowned L's, accosted by four lis, bearing the mint letter in heart., Extremely rare example of the double louis d'or named "à la croix de Templier" (‘with the Templar cross’) (different from the master Louis de la Croix), with a portrait engraved by Jean Darmand Lorfelin and struck with hammer for only three months, between 29 October 1640 and 23 January 1641. Jean Warin's exemples, produced mechanically and of superior quality, quickly put an end to the manual striking. As a result, only very rare half-louis, louis and double louis coins struck with hammer remained in circulation. Our specimen, although cleaned, is slightly double-struck and is finely struck on a centred and slightly wide blank, revealing its entire edge. The date appears to have been re-engraved, particularly the 4, whose upper bar is curved, suggesting the reuse of a ‘0’ or ‘6’ punch? The initial dot in the obverse legend shows a minor defect. Cleaned. From the abbé Thilliez collection., LVD·XIII·D·G·FR·ET·NAV·REX ·1640, ·CHRS· ·REGN· ·VINC· ·IMP✠·
