France Gros de Roi 1512-1514 Louis XII, Rouen, Billon VF(20-25)

Make an offer

Crowned shield with the arms of France, between two crowned uncial L's; an annulet above and below the shield., Foliate and leafy cross, with four annulets diverging from the centre, cantoned by two uncial Ls and two coronets., Speciment of the highest rarity! Having been widely circulated, our specimen shows advanced wear from circulation, but remains overall readable. Unfortunately, there is a fairly significant mark on the reverse.Almost never seen in sales. The only example found in sales was sold by iNumis (Mail Bid Sale 27, 14/10/2014, lot 2254) and no other example has been proposed since. With less than 10 examples known, the Rouen mint is one of the few to have struck this type, which appears to be the rarest and most sought-after by collectors. Only 1 example from this mint is kept in the Cabinet des Médailles at the BNF., + LVDOVICVS: DEI: GRA: FRANCORV REX, + SIT: NOMEN: DOMINI: BENEDICTVM
