Large M surmounted by a dash or tilde, below another dash, a bezant within the M in the centre, all within a grenetis., Four intersecting lines dividing the field into several lozenges, two bezants in the field., The obverse of this denarius is relatively similar to those from Marseille in the Cimiez treasure, buried around 745 and discovered in the mid-19th century. The diamond-shaped reverse seems to evoke a monogram of the letters M and A for Massilia. Our specimen is very similar to that of the denarii from the Cimiez treasure, which provides us with a very interesting dating reference. In view of the exceptional state of preservation of most of the coins in this treasure, it places the coinage a few years before the burial of the treasure, i.e. around 730-740 before the beginning of the reign of Pepin the Short in 751. A rare example.
