Laureate and draped bust of Louis XIV on the right., Crowned shield of France, mint letter below., A very rare 5 sols coin struck in Paris and destined for America! At most, a few hundred examples are known to exist, some of them in public collections. Originally attributed to Canada, where it seems to have circulated, recent discoveries and the discovery of unpublished archives have called this theory into question and it would appear that they were originally reserved specifically for the French Antilles (see Jérôme Jambu, 2021). Our specimen is in very good condition with a pleasant bluish-grey patina. Light old cleaning. Small few die breaks in the legends. From the Alain Devineau collection., LVD·XIIII·D.G (sun) FR·ET·NAV·REX, GLORIAM·REGNI· A ·TVI·DIGENT·1670 (tower)
