Bust of Louis XIV, laureate, draped and cuirassed, with a mascaron on the torso., Crowned arms of France., Superb specimen! This type was only issued in the Bourges mint between 1658 and 1662 using an engraving made by Jean Dufour, assistant to the engraver Jean Warin. The year 1658 was the least struck, as the dies only arrived on 4 October, so only 2,664 examples were produced that year (Clairand 2023). However, there are a several die breaks, for example at 12 on the obverse and in the right field on the reverse, showing that this flan was struck with a worn die. This coin was therefore probably struck in late December. There are also a few adjustment marks on the portrait and, on the reverse, two marks on the edge, at 2 and 10, possibly due to an old mounting as a jewellery. However, the coin has been very well preserved, the engravings have not been significantly affected by circulation, and most importantly, there is a splendid cabinet patina with golden tones. An ideal specimen for any collector of Louis XIV coins, considering its rarity!, LVD• XIIII• D• G• FR• ET• NAV• REX•, SIT• NOMEN• DOMINI• BENEDICTVM• 1658
