Bust of Severus Alexander, laureate, draped over left shoulder, right, Jupiter, standing left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and sceptre in left hand; facing him, Severus Alexander, crowned by Virtus, holding sceptre and sacrificing at tripod; on ground, shield, RIC IV Severus Alexander 556b variant (no S - C). This is presumably an extremely rare As, as it does not bear the "S - C" normally found on all bronze coinage. A similar example was seen at Heritage Auctions sale, 06/01/2019, NYINC Signature Sale 3071, lot 32188, and our example is presumably the second known example of this variety, for a type of As that is already very rare, since none is known in public collections. Some consider these strikes to be "medals" (the Heritage sale calls them "Medallic As") but the term is surely abusive. This As can undoubtedly be considered to be part of a special strike (or a die engraving error?) due to the absence of the mention of the "Senatus Consulte", but there is no historical data to support this hypothesis., IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG, FIDES MILITVM
