Medal of the Capture of Rosas (1645); reverse cast on horn.
A few casts on horn or tortoiseshell are known to have been made in the 17th century – this practice having taken place rather in the 18th and 19th centuries – most of the time used as luxury gifts or collectors’ or ceremonial objects.
The negative cast of the medal suggests that it was made using the medal itself and not the matrix.
10.68 g approximately 42.6 x 40.9 mm
Nice patina. Very rare.
A similarly made example for another medal in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (WE.6626-2014).
