Louis Gallait and his painting The Abdication of Charles V, honoured at the 1841 Exhibition (18th Salon) of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent.

Obverse:
Left-facing bust of the painter Louis Gallait in high relief, shown with a full beard and wavy hair, wearing a jacket with shirt and tie. Around the edge the inscription: “LOUIS GALLAIT · NÉ À TOURNAI”. The medallist’s signature appears in the lower field.

Reverse:
Architectural composition centred on a rectangular inscribed tablet bearing four lines of text: “ABDICATION DE CHARLES-QUINT / TÉMOIGNAGE D’ADMIRATION”. The tablet is set between two columns with ornamental finials. Above, a scroll with the motto “PLUS OULTRE”. Below, two seated putti facing each other, one holding palm branches and the other a laurel wreath. At the bottom, a cartouche with the inscription: “EXPOSITION 1841 / 18e SALON”. Around the edge: “LA VILLE ET L’ACADÉMIE ROYALE DE DESSIN DE GAND”.

Voorzijde:
Naar links gericht borstbeeld van de schilder Louis Gallait in hoogreliëf, afgebeeld met volle baard en golvend haar, gekleed in jasje met overhemd en das. Langs de rand het opschrift: “LOUIS GALLAIT · NÉ À TOURNAI”. Onderaan in het veld de signatuur van de medailleur.

Keerzijde:
Architectonisch opgebouwde compositie met centraal een rechthoekige teksttafel met vier regels opschrift: “ABDICATION DE CHARLES-QUINT / TÉMOIGNAGE D’ADMIRATION”. De teksttafel is geplaatst tussen twee zuilen met bekroningen. Bovenaan een lint met het devies “PLUS OULTRE”. Onder de tafel twee zittende putti, naar elkaar toe gewend, de ene met palmtakken, de andere met een lauwerkrans. Onderaan een cartouche met de vermelding: “EXPOSITION 1841 / 18e SALON”.
