The British Armed Forces Special Vouchers (BAFSV) were issued between 1946 and 1972 to prevent black market trading and inflation in post-war occupied territories such as Germany. After World War II, the British Army of the Rhine needed a secure monetary system to manage their economic operations without destabilizing local economies or encouraging illicit trade. These military-issued banknotes served as a unique currency for soldiers, paid out instead of pounds sterling, and were declared legal tender in the areas they occupied. Despite several issues over the years, their use diminished as the need for military vouchers waned, and they were finally withdrawn in 1979. Today, these vouchers offer a fascinating glimpse into post-war military and economic history.

After the first series of British Armed Forces Special Vouchers (BAFSV) was printed in 1946, the War Office quickly realized that the measures taken were insufficient to curb the flourishing black markets. To address this, a second series was ordered, which was used in several locations, including Germany (British Army of the Rhine), Austria (British Troops in Klagenfurt), Italy (Trieste), Japan, and Singapore.

In 1958, a reprint of the second series was commissioned for use in West Berlin, this time using watermarked paper. Specimen vouchers were created and distributed to local offices as well as to offices in the occupied territories. This 1 shilling note is one of the first examples (3rd) from that specimen set.

De British Armed Forces Special Voucher (BAFSV) werden tussen 1946 en 1972 uitgegeven om zwarte handel en inflatie in door oorlog bezette gebieden zoals Duitsland te voorkomen. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog had het Britse Rijnleger een veilig geldsysteem nodig om hun economische operaties te beheren zonder de lokale economieën te destabiliseren of illegale handel te bevorderen. Deze door het leger uitgegeven bankbiljetten dienden als een unieke valuta voor soldaten, uitbetaald in plaats van Britse ponden, en werden als wettig betaalmiddel verklaard in de gebieden die zij bezetten. Ondanks meerdere uitgiftes in de loop der jaren nam het gebruik af naarmate de noodzaak voor militaire bonnen verminderde, en in 1979 werden ze uiteindelijk ingetrokken. Tegenwoordig bieden deze waardebonnen een fascinerend inkijkje in de naoorlogse militaire en economische geschiedenis.

Na de eerste serie waardebonnen in 1946 realiseerde het Ministerie van Oorlog zich al snel dat de genomen maatregelen niet voldoende waren om de bloeiende zwarte handel te beteugelen. Er werd daarom een tweede serie besteld, die werd gebruikt op meerdere locaties, waaronder Duitsland (Britse Rijnleger), Oostenrijk (Britse troepen in Klagenfurt), Italië (Triëst), Japan en Singapore.

In 1958 werd een herdruk van de tweede serie besteld voor gebruik in West-Berlijn, dit keer op papier met watermerk. Er werden specimenbonnen gemaakt en verspreid naar lokale kantoren en naar kantoren in de bezette gebieden. Dit 1-shillingbiljet is een van de eerste exemplaren uit die specimenserie (3e).
