Visit of Juliana, Bernhard, Beatrix, and Irene to Mexico - Rare

In April 1964, Queen Juliana made a state visit to Mexico, accompanied by Prince Bernhard and their daughter, Crown Princess Beatrix. This visit occurred under dramatic circumstances, as Princess Irene decided at the last moment not to travel. Following her fiancé, Prince Carlos Hugo of Bourbon-Parma’s request, Irene took responsibility and chose not to join the trip. This decision led to a scandal in the Netherlands, as her fiancé was linked to controversial political movements in Spain. Irene’s absence, who was well-known for her strong connections with Mexico, disappointed the host country, but the state visit went ahead as planned.
The royal family was warmly welcomed by Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos. Queen Juliana impressed everyone by giving her arrival speech in Spanish, and she was even honored with a special postage stamp. Despite the tensions surrounding Irene, the visit was successful. The ties between the Dutch royal family and Mexico remained strong, as shown later when Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus chose Mexico as the destination for their honeymoon in 1966.
Bezoek Juliana, Bernhard, Beatrix en Irene aan Mexico - Zeldzaam
Obverse: Bust of Juliana facing; Reverse: Inscription in 13 lines.
