Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, ruled as Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870. His reign, known as the Second French Empire, was marked by modernizations in France as well as a series of military conflicts. However, in the 1860s, his power began to waver due to both internal and external pressures. Political tensions rose, and the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 proved to be a major mistake.

During this war, the French army suffered several defeats against the Prussians. The decisive moment came at the Battle of Sedan on September 2, 1870, where Napoleon III was captured by Prussian forces. This defeat directly led to his abdication and the end of the Second French Empire. Shortly afterward, the Third French Republic was proclaimed, marking a new era in French history. Napoleon III spent his final days in exile in England, where he died in 1873. His abdication marked a significant moment in European history and the beginning of a period of tension between France and Germany.

Napoleon III, neef van Napoleon Bonaparte, regeerde als keizer van Frankrijk van 1852 tot 1870. Zijn heerschappij stond bekend als het Tweede Franse Keizerrijk en was gekenmerkt door zowel moderniseringen in Frankrijk als door een reeks militaire conflicten. In de jaren 1860 begon zijn macht echter te wankelen door zowel interne als externe druk. De politieke spanningen namen toe, en de Frans-Pruisische oorlog in 1870 bleek een grote fout.

Tijdens deze oorlog leed het Franse leger meerdere nederlagen tegen de Pruisen. Het beslissende moment kwam bij de Slag bij Sedan op 2 september 1870, waar Napoleon III gevangen werd genomen door de Pruisische troepen. Deze nederlaag leidde direct tot zijn aftreden en het einde van het Tweede Franse Keizerrijk. Kort daarna werd de Derde Franse Republiek uitgeroepen, waarmee een nieuw tijdperk in de Franse geschiedenis begon. Napoleon III bracht zijn laatste dagen door in ballingschap in Engeland, waar hij in 1873 overleed. Zijn aftreden markeerde een belangrijk moment in de Europese geschiedenis en het begin van een periode van spanningen tussen Frankrijk en Duitsland.
