The bond between the Belgian royal family and Congo began in 1885, when King Leopold II established the Congo Free State as his personal possession. Under Leopold’s rule, Congo became a source of wealth for Belgium but also a place of severe exploitation. After being handed over to the Belgian state in 1908, Congo remained a colony until its independence in 1960.
In 1925, Prince Leopold (later Leopold III) visited Belgian Congo. This visit aimed to strengthen ties with the colony and symbolize Belgian presence. Leopold, then Duke of Brabant, traveled across the country and met local communities. The visit reinforced Belgium’s image as a colonial power but also reflects the complex historical relationship between the two countries.
