Wohl unpubliziertes Medaillon / As des Severus Alexander
IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right
ADLOCVTIO AVGVSTI Severus Alexander standing right on a platform, an attendant behind him and three soldiers bearing standards and shields in front of him
This type is known as a sestertius with SC (RIC 544, BMC 667) and as a mediumsized bronze coin with the additional inscription COS III PP – though without SC. RIC 545 refers to it as an as; Gnecchi cites it in his catalogue of medals (No. 35, page 42). This type, in the weight of an as, without ‘SC’, depicting the Emperor standing facing right, has probably not been published. Like the entire series, it is extremely rare. The coins and medals bearing this design were probably presented as donative to officers and distinguished legionaries during the adlocutio.
