HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P Laureate and draped bust left
COS III P P Emperor galloping left, spearing a big boar
Mittag is aware of only one reverse die for this type. The obverse die shown here is new and unknown to Mittag.
Hadrian loved hunting, but there are no ‘hunting coins’, as hunting was not recognised as a virtuous activity for a ruler in Rome. These medallions therefore must have been a very private gift.
The coin is slightly smoothed and the reverse has been worked on a little. Extremely rare; the type has been offered for sale only once in recent decades (Bertolami Fine Arts, Auction 8, 2014, Lot 565, hammer price 6,000 euros)
