The mint in Karlsruhe produced very high-quality Proofs and packed them for distribution using the latest technology. Sadly, this was a PVC packaging containing chemical softeners. With the passage of time, these ate into the surfaces of the coins, especially the silver and copper ones.

Here we have a specimen which must have been unpacked soon after issue and treated with tender loving care for all of the 60 years since. There is no other explanation for how this fantastic example survived.
