"Pons Ingeniosus" was the name the Romans gave to this amazing structure, whose 21 masonry pillars were anchored in the riverbed by means of wooden caissons. 30 years before our era, they secured the strategically important river crossing in the emerging city of Mogontiacum, today's Mainz, with a bridge over the Rhine. The eastern bank of the bridge was to be used to explore the hitherto largely unknown, enchanted and dangerous terrain in "Germania Magna" and to extend the Roman imperial border eastwards towards the Limes.
The Roman bridge of Mainz is the motif of the latest, now eleventh medal coinage made of Rhine gold. Weighing a quarter of an ounce, an edition of 60 pieces made of this rare and precious material has been issued. Exclusively motifs from the Roman era in the Rhine valley are processed for the Rheingold series, designed in a modern and contemporary manner.
