Historical background:
This medal commemorates Jean-Baptiste Charlier (1794–1880), nicknamed La Jambe de Bois ("The Wooden Leg"), a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars who became a celebrated figure in the Belgian Revolution of 1830. He took part in the insurrection in Brussels, where, despite his prosthetic leg, he served in the citizen artillery defending the city during four days of fierce fighting against Dutch forces.
The dates on the reverse correspond to the key days of the uprising in Brussels that led to the expulsion of Dutch troops and the declaration of Belgian independence.
Medallist:
Louis Jehotte (1803–1884) was a prominent Belgian sculptor and medallist. Trained in Paris and later active in Liège and Brussels, Jehotte was known for his commemorative works and realistic portraits. This medal exemplifies his interest in national themes and popular heroes of the Belgian Revolution.
