A stylized tree under which a robed figure (monk or scholar) picks fruit. The Latin motto "NON SOLUS" ("Not alone") appears to the left of the trunk, and "ELSEVIER" is inscribed at the top. Signature to the right: "Cfr".
Reverse:
Inscription "WINKLER PRINS" above the crowned initials "P" and "W". Roman numerals "MCCMLXX" and "MCMLXX" mark the years 1870 and 1970. Below:
"100 JAAR DEMOCRATISERING VAN KENNIS"
("100 years of democratization of knowledge").
