This medal commemorates the Great Siege of Gibraltar, an excursion by France and Spain to attempt a recapture of Gibraltar from the British. The British lifted the over 3 year siege when Admiral Richard Howe ran the blockade and relieved the besieged Garrison in 1782, portending the impending British victory in spring of 1783.
