Historical context:
This medal was issued for the Cercle Royal Le Lion Belge of Liège on the occasion of its literary and dramatic competition in 1886. The association was one of many cultural societies active in Belgium during the 19th century, promoting theatre, oratory, and literature in the French language. The arms of Liège on the obverse emphasize civic pride and the city’s role as a cultural hub in Wallonia.
