Historical Context:
This rare cast silver portrait medal depicts Antonius Triest, Bishop of Ghent from 1621 to 1657, one of the most important Counter-Reformation prelates in the Southern Netherlands. The reverse is strongly devotional and refers to the Passion of Christ, especially the wound in Christ’s side and the Eucharistic symbolism of the chalice receiving His blood. Comparable examples are dated in the literature and auction records to c. 1652–1656, shortly before Triest’s death in 1657.
