Netherlands, Utrecht, 1612 — Satirical jeton on the Utrecht disturbances of 1610–1611 - ''Dirk Kanter & Hendrik van Helsdingen''
Obverse
Two men dig a pit with spades, watched by a standing figure on the right and a crowd in the background. The standing figure wears a broad-brimmed hat, cloak and sword. The published interpretation identifies the diggers as Dirk Kanter and Hendrik van Helsdingen, acting on the advice of a Spaniard.
Below, the crowned provincial arms of Utrecht divide the date 16–10. A small city shield appears above the scene.
Legend: FOVEAM · [floral ornament] · FODERVNT.
Reverse
The two diggers tumble backwards into the pit. The Spaniard walks away to the right, holding a hand near his mouth, while the spectators disperse in the background. A rectangular panel is visible beside the pit.
The date 1611 appears below the scene; 1612 is incorporated into the surrounding legend.
Legend: IN · EAM · CECIDERVNT · 1612, with floral ornaments between sections.
