This beautiful 1oz silver coin is the new issue in the 'Australia at Night' series, dedicated to some of Australia's most fascinating nocturnal animals. In this edition it has been dedicated to the Flying Fox. Four species of flying foxes are native to mainland Australia, found mostly in northern and eastern temperate climates, as well as subtropical coastal areas. Instantly recognizable by their shadowy presence in the night sky (and by the unmistakable whispering that emanates from the treetops as the sun sets). Intelligent and highly social, the flying fox is extremely vocal, with almost 30 different calls. As a defender of our native forests, this hard-working bat does its part by ensuring cross-pollination, distributing pollen and seeds over long distances.
The reverse shows several flying foxes hanging from a tree branch, two in the background and a closer view of one in the foreground. In the background there is a full moon. The obverse features the coat of arms of Niue.
