The impressive Amsterdamse Poort, now a national monument, is located in the city of Haarlem. Dating back to the 14th century, this gate is the only one of Haarlem's twelve medieval gates still standing to this day. The gate was originally used as a passage to Amsterdam. People usually walked through the door and reached Haarlemmerpoort, in the heart of Amsterdam, within 4 hours on foot.
Amsterdamse Poort, also known as Spaarnwouderpoort, is the first gate in Haarlem to be mentioned in a document. Historians have found remains of ancient city walls at the foot of the gate. The famous Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer is said to have been on the gate walls during the Spanish attack at the Siege of Haarlem. He is a Dutch folk heroine, known for his brave defense of Haarlem against the Spanish invaders. It is also quite remarkable that this gate withstood the siege of Haarlem very well: no major damage was found. Haarlem's Amsterdamse Poort is still impressive to see today.
