In the Middle Ages, Utrecht slowly began to become a large city. And to easily reach the city, four main entrances to the city were built. One of these entries was Catharijnepoort. This gate was located on the west side of the city, near present-day Vredenburg. It owes its name to the adjacent monastery, dedicated to Saint Catherine.
Although no image of the medieval gate exists, several sources say that it was large and robust: Catharijnepoort grew to become the largest and best defensible gate in Utrecht. We also know that this gate was the oldest known storage location for the rights of the city of Utrecht. In 1528, Charles V came to power: he had a large castle, called Vredenburg, built within the city walls. The Catharijnepoort was located outside the castle, directly in the firing range of the city's cannons. The gate is therefore almost completely demolished, although plans are made to rebuild it elsewhere. These plans are put into practice in 1625: a new Catharijnepoort is built. However, it was also eventually demolished in 1830, along with the rest of the city defense of Utrecht.
