The 1896 Swiss 20 Francs gold coin, minted in Bern, is part of the “Libertas” series, preceding the well-known “Vreneli” design introduced in 1897

Obverse: Features a left-facing profile of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, adorned with a diadem inscribed with “LIBERTAS.” Surrounding the portrait is the inscription “CONFŒDERATIO HELVETICA,” the Latin name for the Swiss Confederation.

Reverse: Depicts the Swiss shield bearing a Swiss Cross, set against a background of thin vertical lines representing the red field. The shield is encircled by a wreath of oak and laurel branches, symbolizing strength and victory. Above the shield is a five-pointed star. The denomination “20 FR” flanks the shield, with “20” on the left and “FR” on the right, and the mint year “1896” positioned below. The mint mark “B,” indicating the Bern Mint, is located beneath the wreath’s ribbon.

Edge: Inscribed in relief with the phrase “DOMINUS * PROVIDEBIT ********,” translating to “The Lord will provide.”
