To mark the 35th anniversary of the ERASMUS programme, a common commemorative 2 Euro coin is being minted by all the countries of the European Union. The design created by Joaquin Jimenez, general engraver at the Monnaie de Paris, won the competition organised by the European Commission.
The design is a blend of two major elements of the Erasmus programme: the original intellectual inspiration of Erasmus itself and the allegory of its influence on Europe. The first is symbolised by one of the best-known representations of Erasmus. The second is symbolised by a bundle of links running across the room from beacon to beacon, representing the many intellectual and human exchanges between European students. In reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars born of the synergy between countries. Figure 35 for the 35th anniversary comes out of the stars in a contemporary graphic style.
Edge: striated and insculpted with a 2 followed by two stars, all repeated six times, alternating right side up and upside down.
