The Khazneh, ‘Pharaoh's Treasure’ or Khasneh, is one of the best-known monuments in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. The building is a hypogeum-type Nabataean tomb, with an imposing façade carved from sandstone. It is a major tourist attraction in the city and surrounding region.
It is called ‘Pharaoh's Treasure’ because for a long time the Bedouin who lived in the area believed that the funerary urn at the top of the tholos contained an important treasure. Bullet holes are still visible on the massive 3.5-metre-high urn, showing that attempts were made to pierce it in order to get at the treasure. As the urn, which is not hollow, and the entire façade surrounding it are carved out of pink ferruginous sandstone, these attempts were unsuccessful
