This 50 centimes note was issued by the Compagnie de Béthune on 1 March 1916, in the midst of the First World War. It belongs to series 3 of this issue.
During the conflict, the shortage of metallic currency, due in particular to hoarding and military needs, forced many local entities, chambers of commerce, municipalities and businesses to issue their own means of payment. The Compagnie de Béthune, active in the mining sector of the Pas-de-Calais, was among those organisations that took charge of local monetary circulation by producing necessity notes to compensate for this shortage.
This type of note, known as emergency currency or wartime paper money, reflects the particularly tense economic and social context of this period. The Béthune region, close to the front, was directly affected by the economic disruptions caused by the fighting. These local issues had a use value strictly limited to a defined territory or community, and had no legal tender status outside that area.
The note has a face value of 50 centimes, which corresponds to a common denomination of the time, suited to everyday low-value transactions.
From a numismatic and notaphilic point of view, this note constitutes a direct testament to local economic adaptations during the Great War. Issues from the Compagnie de Béthune are today sought-after collectibles among specialists in French emergency currency, notably due to their strong historical and regional roots.
