The 100 francs Corneille banknote is a French banknote issued by the Banque de France. Dated 2 December 1977, it belongs to series T.1139 and has a face value of 100 francs.
This banknote pays tribute to Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), a major French playwright of the 17th century, considered one of the fathers of French classical tragedy. His works, including the famous Le Cid, earned him a place of the highest rank in French literature.
The Corneille type was introduced in 1976, making it one of the Banque de France's banknote issues of that period. The graphic design of this note follows the tradition of French banknotes of the era, combining a portrait of an illustrious figure with decorative elements characteristic of the graphic arts of the second half of the 20th century.
Series T.1139 allows this banknote to be precisely identified within the overall production of this type. This numbering, specific to the Banque de France's issuance system, is a key factor for collectors, as it partly determines the rarity and numismatic value of the note. The issue date of 2 December 1977 corresponds to the date printed on the banknote itself, distinct from the year the type was created.
In terms of preservation, the condition of the banknote is a fundamental criterion for assessing its value on the numismatic market. Corneille type banknotes are today collectible items representative of the French monetary system of the Fourth and Fifth Republics, before the transition to the euro in 2002, which brought an end to the circulation of the French franc.
