The Monnaie de Paris issued in 2016 a 10 euro silver coin as part of the series dedicated to the Chinese lunar calendar, celebrating that year the Year of the Monkey. This issue is part of the French numismatic tradition of commemorating the cycles of the Chinese zodiac through Belle Épreuve (BE) quality strikes.
The coin features a Belle Épreuve finish, a striking process distinguished by a matte relief on a brilliant background, offering a particularly refined visual rendering. The monkey, the tenth sign of the Chinese zodiac, is honoured on this coin whose iconography is inspired by traditional representations of this animal in Asian culture.
From a technical standpoint, this coin was struck at the Paris Mint workshop A, identifiable by the characteristic letter A of the Monnaie de Paris. It is composed of 900‰ silver, an alloy containing 900 parts of pure silver per 1000. Its weight is 22.2 grams with a diameter of 37 millimetres. Its face value is 10 euros, legal tender in France and the eurozone.
The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a restricted-circulation issue. This limitation in the number of coins produced is characteristic of Belle Épreuve quality issues from the Monnaie de Paris, which generally intends these strikes for preservation in their original state rather than for everyday circulation.
This coin is part of a broader series dedicated to the Chinese zodiac, which the Monnaie de Paris releases each year to accompany the Lunar New Year, one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture and among many Asian communities around the world.
