Cilicia, Tarsus, Mazaios, Satrap of Cilicia under the Achaemenid Empire, AR stater (22 mm, 11.08 g). Ba'al (abomination) of Tarsos seated facing with long sceptre, eagle, grain ears and bunch of grapes on vine, Aramaic inscription "baaltars" = "ba'al of Tarsos"/Lion attacking bull left, Aramaic inscription "Mazaios".
about extremely fine, even old tone, minor planchet flaws, reverse slightly off-struck, a beautifully sharp strike. Rare with an old provenance, yet nevertheless better than the Levante plate coin !
SNG Levante 102
From a German collection formed before 1985;
ex-Kricheldorf list 22, November 1957, no. 122
ex-Etienne Bourgey 14-15 April 1910, lot 197
ex-Jules Norman (1849-1918) collection, Servin, Pas-de-Calais.
Jules Norman was a farmer and poet; asides from forming the beautiful collection sold in 1910, he also researched local finds of ancient coins. Perhaps he saw something bucolic in the bunch of grapes on the obverse !
