General Joseph Gallieni was 1896-1905 Governor-General of Madagascar. After the outbreak of the First World War he was recalled from retirement in 1914 and re-activated as a military commander. To transport his troops to the front on the Marne he used all the taxis available in Paris. Joseph Gallieni died in 1916
