One face shows the normal reverse of the coin: LIARD DE FRANCE above three fleurs de lis, the lilies of the French crown, with the mint letter A for Paris in the centre.
The other face carries the very same design but incuse and in mirror image. This is a brockage. It happened when a coin that had just been struck stayed stuck on the die and then pressed its own picture, sunken and reversed, into the next blank. Because of this the royal portrait that normally sits on the front of a liard is missing on this piece.
The liard was a small copper coin worth three deniers. Louis XIV, the Sun King, ruled France for more than seventy years, from 1643 to 1715, and his copper liards were everyday small change across the whole kingdom. Coins like this passed through markets, taverns and church collection plates, and worn examples travelled far, some even reaching the French colonies in North America. A brockage shows a real moment on the mint floor where two pieces of metal met the die at once. That small accident is exactly what makes this liard fun to own.
