Duchy of Burgundy, gros, Charles the Bold (1467 to 1477), Dijon mint, silver.

Obverse: the quartered coat of arms of Charles the Bold, flanked by two saltires (crosses of Saint Andrew) and a fire steel. Legend KAROLVS DVX ET COMES BVR, Charles, duke and count of Burgundy.

Reverse: a cross of Saint Andrew, flanked by two fire steels and two lilies. Legend SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTV, blessed be the name of the Lord.

Charles the Bold was the fourth and final Duke of Burgundy from the House of Valois. He ruled over a wealthy and powerful, yet geographically fragmented group of territories stretching from the Low Countries to Burgundy itself. The Cross of Saint Andrew was an important Burgundian symbol, while the firesteels and sparks referred to the Order of the Golden Fleece. In 1477, Charles was killed at the Battle of Nancy. After his death, the Burgundian state broke apart: the Duchy of Burgundy passed to the French Crown, while much of the Low Countries eventually came under Habsburg rule through his daughter Mary.
