British India, Madras Presidency, 1/96 rupee or half dub, dated 1797, copper, struck at the Soho Mint near Birmingham.
Obverse: the balemark of the East India Company, the letters V E I C set in a heart below a saltire and the numeral 4, with the legend UNITED EAST INDIA COMPANY around and the date 1797 below.
Reverse: the coat of arms of the Company with two lion supporters and a crest, the value 96 and TO ONE RUPEE below, and the incuse rim legend AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE, meaning under the authority of the King and Parliament of England.

This small copper coin was made in England, not in India. The East India Company ordered its Madras copper from Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint near Birmingham, where coins were struck by steam power. A first order went out in 1794 and a second larger order followed in 1796 for pieces dated 1797. Boulton pressed the lettering into a raised rim so the design wore down slowly and the coins were harder to clip or copy. More than ten million of these 1797 pieces were struck and shipped to southern India, where ninety six of them made one rupee. The heart shaped balemark had marked Company goods and chests for generations before it appeared on the coinage. For collectors this is a clear and affordable piece of East India Company history.
