Java, silver rupee of 1230 AH, that is 1815, struck at Surabaya under the British administration of 1811 to 1816. Variant with a dot and a Z on the obverse. With fluted edge.

The Z below the date is the mintmaster mark of Johan Anthonie Zwekkert, mintmaster at Surabaya.

Britain took Java in 1811, after the Netherlands had been absorbed into France. Thomas Stamford Raffles governed the island as lieutenant governor until 1816. Besides the copper coinage of Batavia, silver was struck at Surabaya, with the rupee as the unit and with dates in the Islamic calendar. Under the Convention of London of 13 August 1814 Britain agreed to return the colony, and on 18 August 1816 the British handed the government of Java over to the Dutch. This rupee of 1815 therefore comes from the last years of the British interregnum, when it was already settled in London that the island would go back to the Netherlands.
