Obverse: a perspective view of the Grand-Mail of Angers, the promenade with porticos at both ends to shelter those walking there. Legend VRBIS ORNAMENTO ET DELICIIS CIVIVM, for the ornament of the city and the delight of its citizens. In the exergue PRÆFECTVRA III and beneath it M D CC VII.

Reverse: the armorial shield of Poullain with helm and mantling, a saltire on a hatched field. Legend with his name and office: F. POVLLAIN DE LA FORESTRIE ESCVYER MAIRE D ANGERS.

Francois Poullain, seigneur de la Forestrie, was mayor of Angers from 1703 to 1707, and the words PRÆFECTVRA III name his third term. Under him the Grand-Mail was replanted and given arcades, and that is precisely the work shown on the obverse. A jeton like this was badge of office and counting tool at once: it lay on the reckoning table of the town administration and carried the arms of the man answerable for the work. In 1707 the Poullain family formally recorded that accepting municipal office did no harm to their ancient nobility.
