Duchy of Brabant, 2 esterlins à l'ange, from 1277, mint Brussels, under Duke John I.

Obverse: the archangel Michael standing facing, holding a lance in his right hand and the nails of the Passion in his left. Legend + MONETA BRVXELLENCIS, translated: money of Brussels.
Reverse: a foliate cross. Legend + IOHANNES DVX BRABANTIE, translated: John, Duke of Brabant.

John I was Duke of Brabant from 1268 to 1294. He is best known for the Battle of Worringen in 1288, where he brought the Duchy of Limburg under Brabant, and he was also known as a poet and minnesinger. The name esterlin à l'ange refers to the archangel Michael on the coin. The denomination itself derives from the English sterling penny, which was widely imitated in the Low Countries in this period.
