England, Stuart, brass Nuremberg jeton or reckoning counter, struck between 1702 and 1714, made by Lauffer of Nuremberg, in memory of the expedition to Vigo Bay.

Obverse: bust of Queen Anne to the left. Legend: ANNA. D. G. MAG.BR. FR. ET HIB.R.

Reverse: view of Vigo Bay with ships attacking and the word VIGO in the field. Legend: ANG[LOR]. ET. BATA[V]. VIRTVTE, which means by the valour of the English and the Dutch. Made by Lauffer, Nuremberg.

On 12 October 1702, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a combined English and Dutch fleet under Admiral George Rooke sailed into Vigo Bay in the northwest of Spain. There it attacked a Spanish silver fleet that had just arrived from the Americas, together with its French escort. The allies broke the harbour boom, seized and burned ships and carried off a large part of the treasure. The blow robbed Spain and its French ally of money they badly needed for the war. Part of the captured silver was struck into English coins that carry the word VIGO under the bust of Queen Anne. The makers in Nuremberg, among them the Lauffer family, produced small brass counters like this one that copied English medals and sold across Europe as keepsakes of the victory.

A worn but honest little witness to a famous sea fight of the English and the Dutch.
