Historical context:
This Belgian commemorative medal was awarded to soldiers who actively fought on the Yser front during World War I. The phrase "Not over the Yser" refers to the determined Belgian resistance that halted the German advance along the Yser River in 1914. The "vuurkaart" ("fire card") was an official certificate proving that the bearer had come under enemy fire in combat. Designed by Émile Canneel (1882–1963), the medal served as a personalized state tribute to decorated frontline soldiers. The name Gustave Van Paemel is engraved to designate the original recipient.
