1830 Bronze Medal – Marriage of Prince Albert of Prussia and Princess Marianne of the Netherlands
Obverse:
Hymen, the classical god of marriage, depicted as a winged, semi-nude figure in flight. He holds a torch in one hand and two garlanded inscription panels: "F.H.A." and "W.F.L.M.H.". Signed below: "D. VAN DER KELL F."
Reverse:
Nine-line Latin inscription commemorating the union, encircled by a wreath of blooming roses.
Historical Context:
This medal marks the marriage of Prince Albert of Prussia (Friedrich Heinrich Albrecht, 1809–1872) and Princess Marianne of the Netherlands (1810–1883), daughter of King William I. The wedding took place in The Hague on 14 September 1830, symbolising a strong alliance between the houses of Hohenzollern and Orange-Nassau. The medal was engraved by David van der Kellen Sr., official mint engraver in Utrecht.
