Historical Context:
This gold medal was awarded as first prize at the 5th International Horse Show (Concours Hippique) in the Netherlands, held in 1907 under the auspices of the Association for the Promotion of Horse Breeding in the Netherlands. Such events were prestigious occasions, attracting breeders and riders from across Europe, and served to promote both equestrian sports and the improvement of horse breeding stock. The obverse features a refined portrait of Queen Wilhelmina, reflecting her role as patroness of national events and the strong connection of the monarchy with Dutch agricultural and sporting traditions. The medallist P. Pander was responsible for several official and prize issues of this period. Gold examples are rare, being reserved for the highest distinctions.
