Historical context:
This medal was issued in 1930 to commemorate Queen Wilhelmina’s 50th birthday and honors Maria Louisa of Hesse-Kassel (1688–1765), Princess consort of Johan Willem Friso and later regent of Friesland. Known as “Marijke Meu”, she played a key role in the continuity of the House of Orange during times of dynastic crisis. The elaborate reverse displays her personal arms and a motto attributed to her as an expression of faith and modesty.
