Eucratides I – AR Obol, ca. 170–145 v.Chr., Greco-Baktrian Kingdom – Dioscuri Type with “ΠΓ” Control Mark
Obverse: Diademed and draped bust of Eucratides I right, wearing crested Macedonian helmet adorned with bull’s horn and ear.
Reverse: Caps of the Dioscuri (pilei), each surmounted by a star and flanked by palm fronds; Greek legend “ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔΟΥ”; control mark “ΠΓ” below.
Historical Context:
Eucratides I was a dominant ruler in the final phase of the Greco-Baktrian kingdom, credited with restoring order and expanding territory after internal turmoil. His coinage combines royal Hellenistic imagery with precise administrative marks, such as the “ΠΓ” on this coin. The Dioscuri caps — twin symbols of divine twins Castor and Pollux — reference Greek military protection and unity. This obol, a fractional denomination, would have circulated widely in the eastern parts of the empire, including Paropamisadai and Gandhara.
